Porto: The Chefs’ Cuisine

Porto is a city that prides itself on welcoming people, at all levels. It is true that the traditional Portuguese cuisine is already an interesting incentive to visit and return to the city, but, in the past years, Porto has developed a more refined, cosmopolitan and signature cuisine.

Although the offer is quite extensive, some names are unavoidable. Just a few steps from the exquisite Palácio da Bolsa is the “DOP”, Rui Paula’s restaurant. The chef, from the Douro district of Alijó, has early developed his passion for cooking, influenced by his maternal grandmother and her old recipes based on local products. Rui Paula, who masters all kinds of dishes, interprets Portuguese classic dishes, such as, bacalhau com broa, polvo à lagareiro, cachaço de porco bísaro com migas de feijão-frade e broa or cabritinho e seus miúdos. If you can’t decide between these dishes, try one of the tasting menus.

If you cross the D. Luís I Bridge, go to the Gaia pier and The Yeatman hotel, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the cuisine of the only chef in the North of Portugal awarded a Michelin star. Ricardo Costa is at the helm of the restaurant of the first wine hotel in the country, named “Michelin Star”, and where every Thursday there are wine dinners with menus designed according to the wine selection of the producing partners of the hotel. This young chef, who works exquisitely on several dishes, interprets the traditional Portuguese cuisine in a contemporary way, favouring the use of fresh products.
